Marketing yourself

Your picture is your most important asset when marketing yourself as an actor/actress. Most actors would not regard themselves as a business but that's what you become when you have a talent to sell.

No business survives without advertising and as an actor you have to advertise yourself in your market place. Film and TV castings are a visually orientated business. Your CV is rarely read at this initial stage. If your picture does not look right your not going to get the work.

Your business

Let me give you a brief resume of how your business works. You get an agent to represent you and get some new pictures. Those pictures help to get you some castings and in return some work. You may work again with the same group of actors or director and this may carry on for a few years. You are happy that you are working but you have forgot to advertise (had no new pictures taken). You are not getting any new work from different sources and the stream of work you have had is beginning to dry out. You then stop work completely, and ......rest!

Change your picture

If Sainsbury's produce the same advert every week we would eventually not look at it. It makes no difference whether the ad was very good, we just get familiar with and it becomes common place. Your picture eventually wears itself out after about a year. It is simply not looked at any more. Its like the vase you bought a month ago, its simply 'part of the furniture' now. The most important advertising tool for generating interest in you the actor is a new picture.
